Bull Run Water Filtration Project

Custom Tunneling Shield System

Project Location

Portland, OR

Project Overview

KEE engineered and fabricated a 114-inch diameter digger shield to excavate twin, parallel 1,240-foot-long tunnel alignments as part of the Portland, Oregon’s Bull Run Filtration Project. Designed to operate in both soft soils and hard rock, the shield features a reinforced digger arm engineered to accommodate a hydraulic drum cutter (aka, road header) for use in formations too hard for standard bucket teeth. Primary ground support will be provided by ribs and boards assembled within the shield. Final assembly and factory testing were completed at Bradshaw Construction Corporation’s facility in Maryland, with the shield delivered to the project site in early February 2025.
