I-40 Girder Gantry

Custom Hydraulic Lifting Device for Bridge Girders

Project Location

Fines Creek, NC

Project Overview

When Kiewit required a high-capacity lifting solution suspended from their custom-designed girder system, KEE delivered a reliable, cost-effective alternative to traditional wire rope hoists.

To place large precast bridge girders, KEE produced a system using two diesel-over-hydraulic, cylinder-actuated lifts. Working in tandem, these units achieved a combined lifting capacity of 80 US tons with a total lift height of 16 feet, through a multi-part rope and sheave arrangement.

Each lift featured an integral diesel hydraulic power unit (HPU) and fully proportional remote controls, allowing precise adjustment of travel speeds and synchronized operation. The result was a powerful, flexible, and easily controlled lifting solution—optimized for both performance and cost.

The system was installed and commissioned in July 2025 and continues to perform exceptionally well in the field
